Shorten USB cable?

Hi,

I just received an XKeys-24 and need to substantially reduce the length of the USB cable. The XKeys sits 6" from a usb port on my PC, and I really don't need 6 ft of cable in a knot on my desk! ;-)

Before I try to open up the case, is there a 'plug/skt'  on the pcb inside the case, and can you supply a shorter cable? about 12" would be tidy.

Any instructions on opening the case/shortening the cable would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Colin

Re: Shorten USB cable?

Colin,
sure thing, all you need to do is to source a shorter "USB 2 cable with a 5-pin header" from an electronics supplier and then open the unit (insert obligatory "If you open the case the warranty is voided" statement here) unplug the old one and install the new one.

Re: Shorten USB cable?

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! Without opening the case, I assume(?) that the pcb has male pins and the cable a female header, so this 50cm cable should do.

Please take a look and confirm.

Re: Shorten USB cable?

No I cannot confirm that one will work, our 5 pin header has a micro latch, it looks like the white end of this cable http://www.microsatacables.com/2-00mm-p … male-cable , I'll look online for a source and post back if I find anything.

Re: Shorten USB cable?

Thanks Liam... I have a soldering iron and heat shrink tube etc, so will probably just shorten the cable inside the case.. Perhaps you should have a range of cable lengths available as an option?  (insert obligatory "If you open the case the warranty is voided" statement here ;-)..

If you do find a cable please post the details, I suspect other users would also find it useful, especially if their keyboard has a usb port making the 6ft on the xkeys redundant.

Re: Shorten USB cable?

You're right Colin I will definitely bring it up at our next meeting (and will include a mention of it in my daily report today), it would be nice to offer a range of cord lengths, and yes insertion of obligatory liability statements is a MUST :)

EDIT:
I just learned that we have some 1 ft cords available (surplus from another project) , if you'd and if that's not too small, I could sell you one.
