X-keys Hardware Mode

All current X-keys USB devices are shipped in what we call Software Mode.  The X-keys identifies itself to the operating system as a unique device and requires our software (MacroWorks 3, or ControllerMate) to interact with your operating system and applications.

The following X-keys USB devices also have the capability to operate in what we call Hardware Mode.

In Hardware Mode, the X-keys stores keyboard sequences and combinations in on-board, non-volatile memory. This feature is very useful for programming an X-keys on one system and moving it to another. In this way, we can support operating systems (like Linux) which do not support our programming software.  A System Administrator or Assistive Technology Professional can also use this method to set up an X-keys on their computer and move it to the end user’s computer without installing additional software.

We offer two applications for converting an X-keys to Hardware Mode. To determine which software is compatible with your X-keys device check the label on the back of the X-keys. "SE" firmware requires Macro Recorder. "MWII" firmware requires the Hardware Mode Programming Utility. The new XK-24 has Hardware Mode capability but no software support for it yet.
